APPROACH

Affective science for everyday emotional functioning

Emotions are not decorative additions to rational life. They organize attention, motivation, learning, action, relationships and the value we assign to what happens around us.

THE FRAMEWORK

Primary emotional systems provide a useful starting map.

I use Pankseppian affective systems as an organizing framework for thinking about motivation and reward, fear and uncertainty, anger and frustration, attachment and loss, care, play, and sexual motivation. Adult emotional problems are higher-order phenomena. They reflect interactions among affect, learning, cognition, social context, physiology and personal history. The systems are therefore starting points for analysis rather than simple explanations.

THE QUESTION

What is the emotion doing?

My interest is functional. What triggered the state? What did it make salient? Which interpretation followed? What action became easier or harder? What consequence reinforced the pattern? A problem can often be understood more precisely by following that sequence than by assigning it a broad label.

EPISTEMIC STYLE

Science is most useful when it keeps its uncertainty visible.

I aim to distinguish what is well supported, what is plausible, what remains speculative, and what popular language gets wrong. Affective science has genuine explanatory power, but human emotional life is too complex for tidy one-circuit stories. The framework should sharpen thinking rather than close it prematurely.

Scope

The categories used throughout this site are educational and organizational. They are not diagnoses. Where a problem suggests a condition requiring clinical or medical assessment, a different form of support may be appropriate.

Where would you like to start?

You can begin with the emotional pattern itself, with the way you would like to work, or simply by reading until something starts to make more sense.
