Psychoanalysis for Former Believers
Online psychoanalysis for atheists affected by a religious upbringing, a high-control religion, or a cult. This work is for people who no longer hold religious, spiritual, or supernatural beliefs.
When belief has ended and its effects have not
You may no longer believe a teaching and still find that it influences how you respond. You might fear punishment you do not expect to happen, feel guilty about ordinary choices, or catch yourself anticipating judgment from an authority you no longer recognize. Knowing that a claim is untrue does not necessarily make its effects disappear on demand.
Leaving may also have cost you relationships, community, or a familiar account of your life. You can discuss those losses without being encouraged to find a replacement faith or reinterpret what happened as part of a higher plan.
What we can work on
We can examine how your former environment continues to affect your mental health, relationships, choices, and sense of yourself. Questions about trust, authority, sexuality, or the right to make your own decisions may become important. You decide what to disclose, and the work develops through sustained conversation about your particular experience.
I do not assume that every religious upbringing or group experience has the same effects. Nor does your history need to explain everything that troubles you now. We can explore its significance without reducing your whole life to it.
Who this work is for
My practice is for atheists without spiritual or supernatural beliefs. I do not offer guidance through an active process of deciding whether to believe, or work organized around preserving a religious or spiritual worldview.
Lingering fear of a teaching you no longer believe is different from continuing to accept that teaching as true. You do not need to be free of its psychological effects before seeking help with them.
